Congressman John Quincy Adams collapses on the floor of the House of Representatives in Washington, D.C.

February 21, 1848

Adams, 81, dies two days later. His last words are said to be, “This is the end of earth, but I am composed.” After laying in state in the Capitol, Adams’ body is transported in a glass-covered coffin by train, stopping in various cities and viewed by thousands of mourners. It is subsequently brought back to Boston, where Adams lays in state at Faneuil Hall before being buried in Quincy.
